SAT- Wonder Woman style

Every week our students create interesting projects demonstrating their use of the assigned 10 SAT vocab words. My favorite activity by far though is where they are asked in groups to write their own song about Wonder Woman (my personal hero) and then we perform the songs in front of class podcasting them for all to hear. I am going to have the students comment about their work and about performing but for me sitting in the audience, there wasn't a better way to spend a Friday, laughing, listening and appreciating their willingness to step out of the box and do something different.

Here are the lyrics to their wonderfully creative tributes to Wonder Woman:
Broken

Soulless Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman on the Range

Wonder Woman

She's Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is my Girl

Wonderwomen

Man I feel Like Wonder Woman

My Bizzare Woman

WonderWoman

Before He Cheats with Wonder Woman

Hero Town

My Tragic Love Song

Wonder Woman Our Hero

I thought that the wonder woman songs were a good idea to get the SAT words in our heads. I was nervous right before we sung our song but once we got going it was a good time. Writting the song was the hardest part. Getting the words to fit with a country song about wonder woman was pretty difficult.

the wonder woman song was a really fun way to learn the words this weeek. I agree with mark that the hardest part was writing the song, but it made me remember what the words mean. it was really cool the way we all were humiliated together, which was nice. I had a lot of fun recording the song becuase it wasn't a big deal that we were all terrible because everyone was really accepting!

The Wonder Woman songs were fun. I was a little nervous at first but as we went on I got into it. The songs were funny and it was cool to see what everyone came up with. It's also a good way to remember what the words mean.

Also, it was good that we did this in groups because it was easier to write the lyrics with a few other people rather than alone.

I admit that i hadn't even studied a bit for the SAT vocab quiz, but after making these songs, the words all made sense to me. This was a great way to learn.

I thought that this was one of the most fun things in the world! It was cool to listen to what everybody could come up with and hearing everybody sing was also hilarious. I love to write lyrics and singing so this was also a great activity for me. And I learned the vocabulary words! So learning can be fun!

I thought this activity was so much fun! It was cool to see everyone's individual spin on country music. I also had fun because it gave me an opportunity to be a total dweeb in front of the whole class. It also got the words stuck in my head and gave me a better meaning of them

I loved doing this SAT activity!!! It was so much fun! We should totally do it again......just not rap. I don't like rap...

This was a great idea, it gave everybody a chance to learn new words and express creativity. It also gave us a challenge to incorporate wonder woman into a country song!!!!

I thought these were really fun, even though I don't like country music. Next time we sould do rock songs, but the songs really helped me remember the words, more than the other activities.

I really don't like country music, but doing this was fun... do cowboys have this much fun? :) Anyways, I think i did good on the quiz because of tis. Lets do it all the time!!!

I had so much fun doing this project! It was not only a good way to remember the vocabulary words, but it was fun to hear everyone else's songs! I wish that we could do this some other time but I know that it is probably a once in a life occurance, which makes it so unique. Thank you Mrs. Smith for coming up with all of these crazy things for us to do!

I'm going to say: fun, fast, and crazy! Some people were laughing through their song, myself included. It didn't take that long, though I'm surprised I'm the only person(other than my partners) who was in a group that brought a real instrument. At least that's what I think. I hope we get to do this again, but now that we're experienced with this, we should make it about whatever! That'd be awesome!

This was a really fun way to learn the vocab. I remembered it and also had a lot of fun working with my friends to get a song ready in just 3 days! It was fun hearing all the silly things people come up with. It would be so awsome if we could do it again.

I think that this was a fun way to really see some fun country songs and some diferent personalities from our classmates. I think, even though I was gone, that the most fun part was to here all the differnt songs and lyrics that everyone came up with, they are really creative! And like I said, even though I was gone, I helpped with the lyrics and like many people have said it was had to fit these words into the song, but it turned out to be very fun and creative. I think this was the most fun activity we have done for our vocab!

What happened to my and Ryans song? It seems that it got cut off early or something. Ms.Smith can we re-do ours.

Haha. Okay so this is hilarious. It was really hard to think of a song to sing and write but it really helped me think of what the words really meant. I really liked being able to step out of the box and do something I've never really done before. It was fun.

You, know, this sort of thing is NOT my... thing. It was embarrassing, educational (in more than one way), and silly. I'm sure everyone enjoyed it, and it was a good way to cram those words into our head.

This is definitely a different activity. I don't remember singing in a regular class for, well, ever. Let alone English. Doing things like this make words stick. History is mine only other out-there class. Just ask anyone who has Cornils. I think it was a good idea, even if I don't really country music. At all.

alexf said...

Well, at first I didn't like this activity at all because i can't sing to save my life :p But in the end I think that it was a really fun! It helped our class get more comfortable with eachother. It was SO MUCH FUN!

I really din't want to do this when we first talked about it because I don't like to sing and I'm not very good at it. But when we actually did it I liked it better, even if is still didn't realy like it.

I thought that the wonder woman songs were a really fun and creative way for us to do our vocabulary activity. It actually did help me to remember the words and their definitions. At first I wasn't too excited about it but I was excited to make up my own song and do something more creative with the vocab words. I was nervous to sing it out loud in front of the whole class too. But once I saw how brave everyone else was and how the class didn't really care if you sounded good or not I felt a lot better. I agree with alexf that it made our class bond together a little more.

This assignment was so much different than anything I have ever done before so it was difficult. I think the most difficult part for me was just getting the words to fit in a country song. I'm not sure if i liked this assignment or not. All I can say is that it was um.... interesting.

I thought this was a very fun activity, and it definitely helped me remember the SAT words. I think the hardest part was putting the lyrics to a song.

I really enjoyed doing the SAT songs about Wonder Woman. I thought that they really helped us learn the words. This was a great way for us to use our imaginations. As you can tell, all of our songs were completely different. This was a unique way to study for an SAT test. I had never studied this way before. What can I say though, this is not education as usual. I agree with everyone else that the hardest part was having the words fit the lyrics and the tune of a country western song. I really had a fun time listening to what other people came up with!

stefo said...

I agree with Katherinem!! Some people have the flow with writing lyrics and I am not one of those people. At first I was really nervous about peforming in front of the class. But it was a very fun and relaxed enivoriment. i enjoyed it alot and really remember my SAT words.

I agree pretty much with what everyone said. I think that it was a really fun way to learn the words, not just cram them into your head five minutes before class. I also think like Maddison and Alexf that it helped the class feel more open and comfortable around people no matter how bad you were at singing. :)

I love to sing, but having to sing a country western song about wonder-woman was a challenge. I mean, honestly, how does Wonder Woman fit in with anything country? Well, I found out shortly after attempting to write song lyrics - not well. She's just really not a country girl at heart. It's not her thing.

Doing these vocab activities has helped tremendously with learning the vocab terms, even though it can be slightly embarassing at times :) Still, I thought this was fun and challenging.

I think that the songs were a great way to get the SAT words in our heads. Once you got iver the fact that you had to sing in front of the class it turned out to be a really fun assignment.

I really liked the idea of having to be creative in writing a certain style of songs that have to have certain words. But when it was our turn to sing i got really scared. But after it was over i can say it was pretty fun.

I think this was a fun activity but we needed more time to practice ans get it together. I thought that it was good that we were pushed outside our comfort zone.

I was pretty nervous about getting up to sing infront of everyone in class, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. After we wrote the song, it was so easy to remember the definitions. All you had to do was think of the lyrics. I liked this activity and i think we should do it again.

I had so much fun doing the wonder woman song. I thought it was really helpful for learning the SAT words so that whenever we were stuck on the test we could just start singing our songs and then I could remember what it meant. It was also a great way for us to step out of our comfort zones and have some fun with each other. I have to agree, this has been one of my favorite activities we've done so far this year.

This activity for learning the SAT words was definitely different. I thought is was hard to find words to match up with a country song about wonder woman. However, the songs turned out very well, they even surprised me at how good they were. This is very unusual for me to learn vocab words this way, so I don't think I got as much out of it as I do with the other activities.

I think that the Wonder Woman songs were a good idea. It's good too step outsied your comfort zone every once in a while. An idea i've had for future songs is that the teacher, Mrs Smith, could pick the song and everyone does the same song so we can see how differently everyone thinks when it comes to songs and music.

maddief said...

I personally am not a huge fan of country, so having to pick out a song and learn it was a real challenge for me. (Home on the Range was about all that I could handle...) However, I thought that it was a great way to learn the words, and it involved dredging up every amount of creativity that we could muster. It was a ton of fun, and I was literally cracking up when I listened to our recorded version later!

I really liked the songs. It definitely helped me on my quiz that week. I was humming the song as I took it. When the words actually mean something to you and you remember how you used them they stick. I also like working with groups because it's cool to see a bunch of new ideas come together!

I thought that the wonder woman songs were a creative, and effective way of learning our sat words. it helped us remember the words because we had to put them into context.

Javonm said...

I thought it was fun to make the wonder woman songs. A lot of songs were really crwative when they were writeen and the style in they were written. Also many of th groups didn't have the tune and had to make it up themselves which made it even more creative way of learning.

clarao said...

The songs were definitely fun to write and they helped to remember the songs, but I didn't like singing them.

clarao said...

Sorry I meant that the songs helped to remember the vocabulary words.

alexd said...

I enjoyed this way of doing the vocabulaty words a lot. I think that it is different and it seems like everyone really stepped out of their comfort level and did something they wouldnt normally do. And it was just completely amusing and fun!!!!!

kristenw said...

This was fun it definatley wouldn't have been an idea of mine to sin in front of the class. But i'm glad i did it because it was really funny. It made me laugh when i tripped on the chair. I want to listen to there song and see if you can hear the crash haha.
I bet i'll remember this for a while.

I personally think this was an awesome way to get our creative juices going, develop team work, learn vocab, AND relax and let loose on a friday. After all, every once in a while it's productive to do that kind of thing. Or in the words of Ben Franklin "all work and no play makes jack a dull boy"

SerenaL said...

I thought the project was really fun. I was a little nervous about singing infront of the class, but since everyone was doing it, I wasn't really embarassed. The Sat words will be helpful once we are seniors.

I really liked this project. It was a very creative and original way to learn our SAT words. It was kind of embarassing, though, singing in front of everyone but I had fun.

Wow you guys we did pretty much AMAZING on these! That was really fun and exciting! OMG Wonder women has quite varied personalities. She must be schizophrenic. Smith I really liked this assignment(even though it was really embarrasing) because it helped me to learn the words way better than any other activity!
