I listened as the inner circle talked about Beatty. Honesty I think there is A TON more behind his character then we think. I mean, he knows all these quotes from books. How did he do this? did he used to be a believer that books were good and knowledgable and then he changed? What also confuses me is that Beatty always says that "I have been through this before" or "I have been through it all" has he?
Also, what totally struck me about him was the cruelty he showed toward Montag. He confuses him horribly with all these quotes and totally throws words and thoughts at him that Montag doesn't understand AT ALL!! Then he gets the warning for Montag's house and drives, doesn't mention a word to Montag except: "Here we go to make people happy"(Bradbury 109). This comment just really struck me because you can sense the cruelty in these words. Beatty knows who's house they are going to, and he knows that Montag will not be happy and that this will totally destroy him. Before this scene I kinda just thought that he was this dumb fire captian that had just memorized facts, but now we see that he does have to ability to think things through.
Sorry this is really long, I just had to get all my thoughts out about his character. Let me know what you think?
I agree on the fact that beatty is way more complex of a character then we thought he was.I think that since he is a fireman he went through the same thing that montag is going through right now, but what I am thinking is that maybe he still reads books but he is just trying to cover it up by burning other books. Just a thought. Also the point was brought up that maybe beatty and faber are on a side together and montag is just getting himself into trouble. I dont know but that is quite thought provoking.
I agree that that was really cruel. How do you hide such a cruel thing from someone unless you really want it to hurt them. Why does he want to do this to montag? What benefits does he get from it? Is he just trying to make himself feel better?
Dont be sorry, you can type as much as you want on the blog :-)
