period 5 question for 225 - 274

What do you think happened to Julia? Do you think that Winston and Julia will ever see each other again? Do you think that, if given the option, Winston would take on more pain to save Julia, based on what you know by the end of the section.

I think that Julia became so scared that she cowardly confessed everything wrong that she did and showed her undying love for Big Brother. I think that she thought that she was a rebel and really hated the Party, but when it came time for torture, she couldn’t stick up for her beliefs and gave in. I think that she also died because, as O’Brien said, they never actually prevent someone from being killed, except certain occasions where the person remains un-human and doesn’t really live. I think she was killed right away. I do think that Winston would take on more pain to save Julia because he THINKS he loves her, but would be disappointed and saddened at the end after going through all the pain for someone like Julia. I think he is a little naïve with everything right now.

I agree with Alex. I also think Julia has died. After all, really no one survives the torture. Besides, Winston is kind of a "special case" if you know what I mean. Not crazy, but different from others. But, I do disagree with Alex on this one. I don't think Winston would go to more pain just to save Julia. After all, if she really did confess everything, that would mean she ratted out Winston, and why would he save her? I guess you could go both ways with it, but this is just my opinion.

I don't think Julia and Winston will ever see eachother again. Julia is not ambitous enough to find Winston and it seems as if her rebelling spirit has already been squandered. Winston will probably try to find her because he is still very interested in what happened to her and he seems to love her more than she loves him. I think Winston would take on more pain to save Julia. He really loves Julia and I think he would be willing to endure some more pain to save her. I think Julia has already become a shell that contains the Party. She always seems to be in it for the rebellion and not really to fix anything, so she would be more willing to just give herself up to the Party than Winston would. She seems to talk the talk but not walk the walk.

I think Julia will will never see Winston again because she is most likely dead. It sounds like the ministry i very brutal and will execute you once you love Big Brother. Julia may have broken down, loved Big Brother, and promptly been shot. My guess Winston thinks he will be able to take on more pain for Julia, but there will probably be some sort of torture tool that is unbearable for Winston and he will wish it on Julia.

Okay, it's really hard for me to answer this one because I finished the book a while ago. However, I will say that I think Julia is in the Ministry of Truth going through the same treatment as Winston. I think she is having an easier time because, unlike Winston, she wasn't an intellectual rebel but just a rebellious woman who enjoyed hating the Party. She didn't have any interest in books, the past, or being sane, so she didn't have that much to be brainwashed into thinking besides that sex was bad and Big Brother was all important. I doubt she went through as much trouble to reform as Winston did. I think Winston would endure much pain before betraying, and really betraying Julia, because he does love her. However, in this society, there MUST be a breaking point for everyone where the Party finally changes them to the very core. Other than that, I don't want to make a prophecy because that would totally give stuff away.

Well, I have to say that I agree with Alex in the thought that Julia became so cowardly that she confessed everything and became the Party's biggest fan. She was then quickly relased because they were so impressed by her progress, and she is going to go back out into the society, after the fear of the Party has worn off a little, she will find another man like Winston. Julia just doesn't seem like a strong character to me, she doesn't have much smarts as well; she would easily give in.

I found it so interesting that Winston didn't really seem to love Julia like the deep, passionate love he thought he felt before. He even admitted right away that he was thinking more about O'Brien then her. I don't think Winston loves her enought to actually want to take more pain on her behalf (plus I bet the Party wouldn't allow that to begin with, remember, true love is not allowed).

I think that there is a very small chance that Julia and Winston will ever see each other again. Winston would have to totally turn around and give in totally to the Party, they would have to be so proud of him that they would actually let him back into society, and then who knows after that. But I just think that the Party would try so hard to keep them seperated.

I think that Julia is basically getting the same treatment as Winston, only less severe. I think she'd be much more easily turned to the Party than Winston because she was rebelling simply to rebell.
I do think that they will see each other again, but I don't think they will even like each other when that time comes. I don't think that Winston would take on more pain to save Julia. I know she wouldn't do the same for him. He at least tried to love her, but it was easy to tell that she didn't really love him. Unless they both truly loved each other neither of them would sacrifice themself for the other. It just doesn't work that way.

Like hannah I have already finished the book so it is hard for me to answer this one without giving away a future event. I do think that Julia got to same treatment as Winston because she was also a rebel and was there with him. I do not think that Winston would take on the pain of Julia because even though he loved her, when it came down to it, he would rather share the pain then have to suffer it all himself. Winston even gave in to the party because of the pain, he would give up julia to stop the pain also, I think.

I agree with Morgan and Hannah. I think that Julia is in the Ministry of Truth recieving similar but not quite as vicious treatment, because she only rebelled for her own personal pleasures, not to actually change the government. I think both Julia and Winston will end up turning each other in, because in this society no matter how hard one tries to change the fact, it is impossible to truely love someone and being willing to die for the other's safety. If they ever do see each other again, I don't think they will do anything like they used to do.

I think that Julia was tortured and then confessed. However I feel like she got off easy. To me Julia seems like the person who could get away with things. I just feel like she most likely slept with one of the people who tortured her, therefore I think she is still living. I think Julia has joined the Party’s side for good, however Winston is a little more stronger for standing up in what he believes in. I do think that Julia and Winston will see each other again. It just seems like they will either see each other one last time, or at least find out what happens to each other. And if given the option I think Winston would take on one more pain to see Julia, not to save her. I do not think Winston would save Julia out of love, rather just to see what happened to her.

At this point, Winston has felt so much pain, taking on Julia's pain wouldnt be so much different. I don't think Winston will ever get out of this. I think he will be shot soon because no one escapes the Big Brother government. The chapter in which Julia was taken away, the book says that that was the last time they saw each other, so I'm guessing they'll never see each other again.
I have no idea what happened to Julia. Probably faced a fate similar to Winston's.

based on this section, I am starting to wonder if Julia actually on the side of big brother. Since O'Brien turned out to be evil (which i kind of suspected all along) i think Julia will also turn out to be an evil character. she may have told the party some of the stuff Winston confessed to her. In that case, she is an even worse villian than O'Brien (or Big Brother) because Winston trusted her so much.

I think that Winston will not see Julia again. He was to emotionaly attached there for the have to be totally seperated. It may be possible that the Party changed her appearance. I think Winston has given up all hope he just waits to die. He is already dead he is just waiting for his physical body to be killed.

I think that Julia is having an experience much like Winston's. This is kind of hard to answer now because I have finished the book. I find it interesting though because I have never really thought that they love eachother. I don't think that either of them is really capable of love in the sense that we think of it as in our world. So I don't find it surprising that they would act in the ways that they do. I think that with them, their love is more a love of braking the rules and having someone with the same experiences as the other. SPOILER: I totally saw it coming that both of them would betray eachother when O'brien was questioning them. I think that the only reason that Winston had not yet "betrayed Julia" was that he hadn't fully succumbed to Big Brother and was still essentially breaking the rules.

I already know what happens, so I would say anything here. I also know the answer to the next question, so again I won't say anything. I doubt anyone would take on more pain for anyone. It is hard enough, and it seems to me like what they already give you is so hard that it almost kills you, and so extra pain might just do you in. I also don't think Julia would take on more pain to save Winston. She doesn't seem like the type.

Ah, getting at this a bit late aren't I? Anyways, I don't think that Julia is dead. My personal philosophy is that she conformed right away because of her upbringing and her views on the party. She was always quick to obey and then rebel in a dramatic fashion. This kind of rebellion is probably dealt with easier than Winston and other trying to bring down the party with a plan. Another possibility is that she is stronger than we thought, and is enduring the torture that Winston is going through. Though, my bet is that she is doing her duty in the anti-sex league, ratting people out and using newspeak to prove her undying love of Big Brother. Ooh, I'm quite the cynist today! -Mac

I think that Julia was just taken away, but was not put through the torture that Winston went through because she did not have her mind agaisnt the party, only disobeyed the party. I think that she was taken, threatened, and shot or released. I do think Winston will maybe get to see Julia again, maybe once before he is shot. This will happen because it would eb very powerful if they met up again and were glorifying the party and did not love each other. I do not think Winston would take more pain in order to spare Julia some, he does not love her that much.

I think that bottom line; Julia was more of a talker than a walker. I really saw a passion in Winston and a DRIVE, I only saw passion in Julia and I think that that is what caused her to... "Chicken out".

I think Julia is dead because I think it takes someone very different to survive the torture. I think that Winston is a "special case", as Morgan said. Also, I don't think that big brother felt as threatened by Julia as they did by Winston, so they want Winston to suffer a lot.

I used to think that Winston was madly in love with Julia and that he would do anything for her, but it is becoming more clear that what Winston and julia had was not love and I don't really think he would save her.

I agree with everyone, I don't think Winston will ever see Julia again. I think she is either dead or was re-conformed into total submission to the party. Winston probably would save her because he was so madly in love with her but I don't think Julia would appreciate his sacrifice.

I think that Julia has gone and left faster than Winston because she is weak. I think that she is already dead or back into the world as a "cured" person. I think that Winston may never betray Julia because of his love for her. They might see each other again but they might not recognize that one is the other.

I think that Julia may have given in to loving Big Brother quickly. Like Winston said, she was only really a rebel from the waist down. She never cared to learn why the Party was wrong or how to change things to how they had been before. I think that in the face of torture, she would just give in and renounce her 'beliefs' and love Big Brother. I think that because she will give in so quickly that she may be released as someone who was cured. I think that Winston and Julia may see each other again once they are cured (assuming they aren't shot)but they will no longer have feelings for each other because they betrayed each other and can only love Big Brother.

I think that along with most people that Julia has given up on life. She has forgotten about rebelling and is going on with loving big brother. Even though she wants to meet with Winston it isn't to rebel. Winston might be the same way.

I don't think Julia gave in right away, but I do think she gave in before Winston did. I don't think she was as strong as Winston was, but I don't think she just betrayed him right at the beginning.
